Getting Started with Your Ledger Device

Follow these steps to set up your Ledger hardware wallet securely

1 Visit Ledger.com/start

Begin your journey by navigating to the official Ledger.com/start page. This is your central hub for all setup resources and the official Ledger Live App Download.

2 Download Ledger Live

Select the appropriate version of Ledger Live for your operating system. Ledger supports Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. The Ledger Live Desktop application is required for initial setup.

3 Install Ledger Live

Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. During installation, you'll create a strong password for your Ledger Live Login. This password encrypts your local data but does not protect your crypto assets.

4 Connect Your Device

Connect your Ledger hardware wallet to your computer using the provided USB cable. For Ledger Nano X, you can also connect via Bluetooth. Power on your device by pressing the button.

5 Configure Your PIN

Set up a secure PIN code (4-8 digits) using the device buttons. This PIN protects physical access to your Ledger wallet. If someone enters an incorrect PIN three times, the device resets itself.

6 Write Down Recovery Phrase

Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. Write these words in exact order on your recovery sheet. This phrase is the master key to your crypto assets. Never digitize it or share with anyone.

Security Warning

Your 24-word recovery phrase is the only way to restore access to your cryptocurrency if your Ledger device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Store it securely offline in multiple locations. Never enter it on any website or share it with anyone, including Ledger support.

Installing Apps and Managing Crypto

Ledger Live Interface

Install Blockchain Apps

In Ledger Live, navigate to the Manager tab. Install apps for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Each blockchain requires its own app on your Ledger hardware wallet.

Add Accounts

Create accounts for each cryptocurrency you want to manage. The Ledger wallet Setup process generates unique addresses for each account. Verify receiving addresses on your device screen.

Send and Receive Crypto

To receive crypto: copy your address from Ledger Live and verify it on your device screen. To send crypto: prepare the transaction in Ledger Live, then verify and approve it directly on your hardware wallet.

Advanced Features

Ledger Wallet Extension

The Ledger Wallet Extension (Ledger Connect) allows you to securely interact with Web3 applications. Install it from your browser's extension store. When connecting to dApps, transaction requests are sent to your hardware wallet for verification.

Mobile Management

After initial setup with Ledger Live Desktop, you can install Ledger Live Mobile (iOS/Android) and pair it with your device via Bluetooth (Nano X) or USB-C cable (Nano S Plus).

Staking and Earning

Directly within Ledger Live, you can stake supported cryptocurrencies to earn rewards. The platform also integrates with DeFi services like Lido, Aave, and Compound for additional earning opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Ledger.com/start and hardware wallet setup

Why do I need to use Ledger.com/start?

Ledger.com/start is the official resource for setting up your Ledger device. It provides the genuine Ledger Live App Download and step-by-step instructions. Using any other source could expose you to malicious software designed to steal your recovery phrase. Always verify you're on the official Ledger website before downloading software.

Can I set up my Ledger without a computer?

While you can manage crypto using Ledger Live Mobile, the initial Ledger wallet Setup requires a desktop or laptop computer. The Ledger Live Desktop application is necessary for firmware updates and installing blockchain apps. After initial setup, you can use your device with mobile devices via Bluetooth (Nano X) or USB-C (Nano S Plus).

What's the difference between Ledger Live and my hardware wallet?

Your Ledger hardware wallet stores your private keys offline in a secure element chip. Ledger Live is the interface application that communicates with blockchains and prepares transactions. When you make a transaction, Ledger Live creates it and sends it to your hardware wallet for verification and signing. This separation ensures your private keys never leave your device.

Do I need the Ledger Wallet Extension?

The Ledger Wallet Extension (also called Ledger Connect) is required when interacting with Web3 applications like decentralized exchanges, NFT marketplaces, or DeFi platforms. It creates a secure bridge between your browser and your Ledger device. For regular crypto management (sending/receiving), you only need Ledger Live. The extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, and Brave browsers.

How often should I update Ledger Live?

You should update Ledger Live whenever a new version is available. Updates include security improvements, new features, and support for additional cryptocurrencies. Ledger Live will notify you when updates are available. Similarly, keep your device firmware updated through the Manager tab in Ledger Live for the latest security enhancements.

Can I use multiple Ledger devices with one Ledger Live?

Yes, Ledger Live supports multiple devices. You can add different Ledger hardware wallet devices to the same Ledger Live instance and switch between them. Each device will have its own set of accounts. This is useful if you want to separate assets (e.g., personal vs. business) or as a backup strategy.
